The Bates - Sheppard House, which houses the DeWitt County Museum, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark. In addition to the home, a two-room log cabin is also located on the grounds. The home and log cabin have a fascinating history that includes connections and memories with the early settlement days of old Indianola, a Gulf Coast port rivaling Galveston in its time.
