Olmos Creek marks the beginning of the Kenedy County sandsheet and the immense expanse of coastal grasslands and isolated oak mottes of the Texas coastal ranch country. South of Olmos Creek, birds considered specialties of the Lower Rio Grande Valley (Valley) such as Harris’s Hawk, White-tailed Hawk, and Crested Caracara become common— in fact, more common than along the Rio Grande itself.
