Scientific Name: Megalops atlanticus
Common Name: Tarpon or Silver King
 
Description: Back is dark blue to green or greenish black, shading to bright silver on the sides, may be brownish gold in estuarine waters, huge scales, a large mouth points upward. Commonly 40 to 50 lbs. Tarpon Tolerate a wide range of salinity and are found primarily nearshore, and less frequently in estuaries and rivers. Adults spawn offshore between May and September. Tarpon are slow growers, taking 7 to 13 years to mature and feed mainly on fish, shrimp and crab. Take limits: Catch and release only. Special regulations allow one tarpon 80 inches or greater if accompanied by a Tarpon Tag. Consult current Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) regulations.
